KENNY DALGLISH & IAN RUSH, LIVERPOOL, 1982 - WELL OFFSIDE PHOTOGRAPHY
Kenny Dalglish was a hero to Ian Rush when the 19-year-old Welshman signed for Liverpool in 1980. Here, two years later, as Kenny slots his second at White Hart Lane, with Liverpool riding high at the top of the First Division, you can tell that’s still the case. Look at the grin. The King would eventually move upstairs, and Rushie would become Liverpool’s leading all-time goal scorer, but this was them at their terrifying best.
“He had the vision, and I had the pace” Rush explained to us, “It's a cliché, but the first couple of yards are in your head and, combined with my speed, that always gave me three or four yards on the defender. As soon as he used to receive the ball and turn—and nobody turns like Kenny—I'd know that the ball would be going between the defender and the goalkeeper and I was off. That's how good Kenny was.”
