JOHAN CRUYFF, AJAX, 1978 - WELL OFFSIDE PHOTOGRAPHY
The Dutch master receives a traditional Bavarian cap from Bayern Munich goalkeeper, Sepp Maier, ahead of his testimonial and farewell match in Ajax colours back in November 1978. It’s all smiles here, but Bayern Munich would go on to thrash Ajax 8–0, tearing up the script, and well and truly putting a dampener on Johan’s big farewell to his childhood club. It was Ajax’s biggest defeat since 1913, sent the crowd at the Olympic Stadium in Amsterdam into a frenzy, and did absolutely nothing for already strained German-Dutch relations. The Bayern team, who had allegedly taken offence to not being picked up at Schiphol airport and being put up in a dodgy hotel, were duly uninvited to the afterparty that Ajax had planned for Cruyff that evening. Danke schön, danke schön very much indeed, Bayern Munich.
