LIVERPOOL FANS, 1965 FA CUP FINAL, WEMBLEY - WELL OFFSIDE PHOTOGRAPHY

£40.00

There was a story that was told in Liverpool, prior to 1965 and mainly by Evertonians, that the Liver Birds, atop the building of the same name on the city’s iconic waterfront, would fly away before Liverpool Football Club won The FA Cup. They’d come close twice before, losing in the 1914 and 1950 finals, and this one had to run to extra time before they clinched it against Leeds United at Wembley. Roger Hunt scored in the 93rd minute, and Ian St. John cancelled out Billy Bremner’s late equaliser in the 117th minute, with a diving header that would go down in Liverpool footballing folklore. They’d done it, they’d finally done it. Ee-ayy-addio, they’d won the cup. Bill Shankly would call the victory his finest footballing achievement, and Liverpool looked set for European dominance as well. What happened a couple of weeks later in the San Siro scuppered that, but that’s a story for another time, and perhaps another photograph.
