DAVID BATTY, LEEDS UNITED, 1992 - WELL OFFSIDE PHOTOGRAPHY
David Batty won the league with Leeds, refused a winners medal when he was at Blackburn because he felt he hadn’t contributed and, apparently, was often made to drink a raw egg and sherry by Billy Bremner when he was a young lad at Leeds. He was a fucking brilliant player, technically sound, great engine, and hard as coffin nails. He was also a wind-up merchant, and for some reason decided to combine all of this into a meaningless preseason friendly against Sampdoria, from which this photo is taken. He made Roberto Mancini blow his top, twice, caused a brawl when he sent Marco Lanna over the advertising hoardings, embarrassed the same player with a delicious drag back, and went through a repertoire of winks, shoves, and sly digs that, when all is said and done, you just have to applaud.
