WORDS: James Bird

Refereeing is hard. Being a lino? Possibly even harder. Straight lines and stretched toes and through balls and judging when someone’s started their run. Really hard. Whether you’re helping out your little brother’s team on a Saturday morning, running the line for your dad and his big mates on a Sunday afternoon, or in the World Cup final this summer—it’s a proper tough gig. Linos need love. Love from us. Love from each other.

In the Romanian Fourth Division this weekend, a couple of linos provided exactly that to all around: love. After the captains flipped the coin between ACS CAO 1910 Oradea and CS Diosig at the Iuliu Bodola Stadium, assistant referee Marius got down on one knee to ask assistant referee Gyiorgi to marry him.

There weren’t many in the crowd, but those who were made an impact. A group of Marius’ mates held up a letter each to also ask Gyiorgi “WILL YOU BE MY WIFE?”, just in case she couldn’t make out what he was doing down there on the turf. And well, as a green smokie (woosh!) and a blue smokie (woosh!) went off in the stands, Gyiorgi said… yes.

A pleasant tale of love, celebration, and officiating, then. And one that, you’d hope, cannot be overturned by a Video Action Replay. Fare well, young loved-up linos. Fare well. OFFSIDE!
