Goals are the the only stats that matter, really.
Who scored the most in the season? Who scored the most in one game? Who can score more than once? None of those matter, what we care about is how fast people score goals. How fast can you score 100 goals? Have you even scored 100 goals in your life? We doubt it.
In this excellent video put together by FDOR, we see who made it to 100 goals the fastest in Europe’s top five leagues. Starting with the Premier League, big Alan Shearer blasts his way to the lead. He reaches 100 goals in 124 games for Blackburn. Blackburn. Fair play. Harry Kane did it in 141, Fowler in 175, while Belgium’s greatest striker Romelu Lukaku did it in 215 games. Not bad.
Gerd Müller carries on the tradition of older strikers doing better over in the Bundesliga (or was it simply easier to score goals back in the day?). He managed to get to his ton in 136 games, which is silly. Mario Gomez of Mario Gomez Button fame did it in 181 games. Thomas Muller, who technically still doesn’t have a position, makes the top eight through sheer willpower.
Zlatan Ibrahimović and Edinson Cavani make a mockery of Ligue 1 thanks to PSG’s gigantic bags of cash. They sit first and second respectively in France. Arsenal’s Alexandre Lacazette languishes back in sixth, the poor sod. Interestingly though, the top eight positions are shared by three clubs, PSG, Marseille, and Lyon. Make of that what you will.
If you wanted some sort of proof that defenders are that much better in Serie A, then here you go, enjoy. It took the top eight goalscorers in Italy at least 150 matches to reach 100 goals. Some feat regardless. Gonzalo Higuaín, the world’s most unloved striker, sits top, while Ibrahimović and Cavani reappear.
Over to La Liga where Cristiano Ronaldo and Ferenc Puskas do battle for the first 50 matches of their Real Madrid careers, before the Portuguese pulls away and reaches 100 goals in 92 games. Ninety-Two. Brazilian Ronaldo makes his ton in 131, while Alien Boy Lionel Messi takes his time to find his shooting boots. He took a massive 154 matches to get to 100 goals. The Real Madrid-Barcelona duopoly is only broken up by David Villa of Valencia. Remember him? Pointy sideburns. Nice bloke.
What do you think of that then? Who was the best? Argue below. Do what you like.
