England will hope to bring the World Cup home this summer in a thoroughly bespoke kit by Nike. Featuring a subtle revamp of the classic white home kit with a brand new colourway, inspired by loads of English regions, for away fixtures. You’re going to want all of it.
The new home kit has been given some extra touches, with the dark red cuffs a striking feature that moves it away from the traditional men’s. “The flood-white look gives an aura of strength and purity. This minimalism translates as sophistication and confidence—perfect for this team,” says Cassie Looker, Nike Women’s Football Apparel Lead. It’s perfect for beer gardens again this summer. Nice.
The socks have an original pattern, too, featuring a hand-drawn print symbolizing the flowers and fauna of the regions of England. Looker explains, “The common poppy, primrose, rosebay willowherb, wood anemone, spring gentian, Nottingham catchfly, and traditional rose intermingle with the hop to form a floral pattern that represents the entire country.” As if the whole country wasn’t already behind them, this is a perfect way to embody England in a positive manner that looks good as a design.
While the flower and fauna design is used subtly on the socks for the home version, it’s used fully on the away kit, with the pattern replicated across the shirt. It’s given a fresh new colouring as well, with a deeper shade of red crush exclusive to the Lionesses. England’s Fran Kirby is buzzing to see the team get theirs, “It is great to see kits designed specifically with us in mind," she said. "The home kit is really classic, while the pattern of the away is exciting and new."
With England having reached the semifinals in 2015, plus a SheBelieves Cup behind them from March, how great would it be to see the Lionesses bring it home in July? England Steph Houghton certainly still believes, “We have gone close a couple of times now, and the response has been amazing," says Houghton. "It feels like there is genuine momentum behind the team, bigger and bigger with each major tournament we play, and another successful summer can really help push women’s football to the next level."
Nike’s new 2019 football kits will debut on national teams this month and will be available on nike.com in May.
