Pope Francis has confirmed that his fellow countryman and Barcelona talisman Lionel Messi isn’t actually God.

Speaking to La Sexta journalist Jordi Evole, following Messi’s brace in this week’s Espanyol game, God’s representative on Earth explained that claiming the 31-year-old is godly is, in fact, sacrilege.

 Here’s an excerpt in English:

Jordi Evole: Is it sacrilege to say that Messi is God?
Pope Francis: In theory, it is sacrilege. You can’t say it and I don’t believe it. Do you believe it?
Jordi Evole: I do.
Pope Francis: I don’t [laughs]. People can say he is God, just as they may say “I adore you”, but only God can be worshipped. Those are expressions from people. “This is a God with the ball on the field” is a popular way for someone to express themselves.
Jordi Evole: But he plays well doesn’t he?
Pope Francis: Of course, he is very good, but he isn’t God.

The news no doubt comes as a relief to Manchester United fans, with the Red Devils set to take on Messi’s Barcelona in the upcoming Champions League quarterfinals on Wednesday 10th April.

  • To say God’s representative on earth to the pope is dangerous and blousphemy. The bible only can take that place. Roman imperialism and Catholic false teachings are a disgrace to the world
