Words: Jack Morrison

You know how the saying goes: ‘No Armani, No Verratti’. Or was it, ‘No Armani, No Shaarawy’.

Can’t remember. Either way, the Italian national team is going to be looking suave in their new suits provided by Giorgio Armani.

And it’s not just the men who are getting kitted out. The female and U21 teams will be provided with a suit, shirt, and coat, too. Like a gang.  Armani has said that the collection will ‘offer our athletes my idea of soft formality, of elegant practicality.’ That ‘formality’ and ‘practicality’ presented in drawings which look scarily like an e-fit of Agent 47 off Hitman (only he's got none of these arty drawings' lovely hair).

Oh, and there’s an Armani bag, backpack, belt, and glasses. The full rig. Essential items when you’re about to go out and assassinate someone's defence.

Anyway, Armani have previously designed the Azzurri's uniforms for the 1994 World Cup and the 2012 and 2016 Olympics. The announcement of the partnership came as the Italian National side starts their Euro 2020 campaign, with two qualifying games against Finland and Liechtenstein on the horizon. Each item is adorned with the Federazione Italiana Giuoco Calcio’s logo, and the outwear is equipped with detachable linings so it will be usable in multiple seasons.

Armani describes his creations as ‘another way of bringing Italianness to the world’. We’re all for it, as long as it’s the good stuff like Baggio and Maldini, and a little less of those really hard biscotti you get sometimes with your coffee that makes your teeth crack in half.
