For all your lusting over imperious centre-backs, impish wingers, and ingenious playmakers: really, it’s goalscorers that are the main event.
Without them, it’s just an exhibition match. With them, there’s drama. And while the collective noun for “loads of goals” may vary, the outcome is the same: goals win matches. And, over the course of a season, whoever has the most god-given goalscorers, usually, wins the lot.

We came across this handy little graphic. You might’ve seen similar for the biggest spenders in the Premier League. Colourful bars flit and flex before one or two bars leapfrog the lot and reach out way in front like Roger De Vlaeminck activating his robotic calves in the Paris–Roubaix to break away from the pack.
No prizes for guessing who’s out in front—a certain Argentine genius and a certain Portuguese marketing tool—but seeing it laid out in front of you still puts it into stark perspective: man, that’s a lot of goals.
