Fans of FC Schalke 04 and 1. FC Nürnberg have enjoyed a close friendship for years, and to celebrate the special bond between the clubs, Umbro have designed special shirts for both ahead of their match this Friday.
Their unique friendship arose from a chance meeting in the 1980s when Nürnberg fan Monika made friends with a Schalke fan on a train to a football match, leading to both sets of supporters having a big party when the teams met in Gelsenkirchen, and becoming best pals from then on.
Schalke will take to the pitch sporting Nürnberg’s Frankish rake pattern across their shirts, donning blue instead of maroon. The boys from Bavaria will be wearing their traditional colours, albeit with the motif replaced by the traditional hammer and mallet motif of their friends from Gelsenkirchen.
Alexander Jobst, Schalke 04 head of Marketing and Communications is delighted with the outcome, “With the special jersey, we are paying tribute to the fan friendship between our club and 1. FC Nürnberg in a unique way. With our joint jersey partner Umbro, we have designed two extraordinary jerseys, which, because they are limited, already have a real collector’s value for many Schalke and Nürnberg fans.
