Manchester City used to be absolutely pony. It’s difficult now to cast your mind back to a time before Roberto, Manuel, and Josep. Before Sergio and Vincent and Yaya. But sometimes, on a clear day, if you close your eyes, you can remember when they were bad. If you’re lucky, you’ll remember there was a game that began to change it all…

In a time of inflatable bananas, of Dickov, Horlock, and Weaver, Manchester City beat Gillingham on penalties in a 1999 play-off final to secure promotion to the First Division. They wore a fluorescent stripy kit that has since been seared into City folklore. The handsome, trustworthy lads at Nike have paid tribute to it for the 2018/19 season. They’ve toned it down a bit because it isn’t 1999 anymore, but the socks are suitably insane.

If you haven’t seen the 1999 Second Division play-off final, you really, really must. You can buy the handsome, adventurous Nike kit here, and you can read about Man City and England superstar, Raheem Sterling, in our latest issue here.
