Before he was all overcoat and gusto at Porto, before he was The Special One at the Bridge, before he sulked his way through spells at Inter and Real Madrid and came back to Chelsea for a third big sulk, before he was shipped in to rejuvenate Manchester United, and before he was living in a travel tavern, José Mourinho was a translator.
Not just any old translator, mind. José was Bobby Robson’s assistant at Barcelona and was charged with the unenviable task of helping a side that included Ronaldo, Pep Guardiola and Giovanni understand what Sir Robert William Robson CBE was on about. Not renowned for his brevity and clarity, even in his native tongue, Sir Bobby led the Catalan side to a Copa del Rey, Supercopa and European Cup Winner’s Cup with José acting as his right-hand man, so we can assume he was quite a good translator.
