Whether it was a pixellated Mini-Disc Juventus shirt with Ravanelli on the back that your grandad got you on holiday, a deep red, brand-spanking new United shirt from the club shop, or a pair of cotton Wolves kit pyjamas you were born into—you can remember your first football shirt. Little colourful memories of who bought it for you, what the polyester felt like, how the badge itched your chest, whether you scored a screamer in it on the bit of grass outside your house. They’re important.
Our mates at Football Shirt Collective have collaborated with Season Annual to create ‘Your First Football Shirt’—an illustrated book of interviews with footballers and famous fans about their first and favourite football shirts. All the profits go to two really important charities: CALM—the Campaign Against Living Miserably, a movement against male suicide, the single biggest killer of men under 45 in the UK, and the Willow Foundation—an initiative providing terminally ill young adults aged 16 to 40 with uplifting and unforgettable special days.
The book features interviews with an array of football-affiliated people, including Alan Shearer, Iain Macintosh, Amy Lawrence, Jonny Sharples, and our very own boyo Sam Diss. With each interview brought to life by a different illustrator and some genuinely moving first football shirt stories and interviews, it’s a bloody lovely piece of work with an amazing initiative behind it.
